Phoenix Theatres  partnering with MPA Presents the Douglas Trumbull Film Forum December 7th Film Forum Dedicated to the Filmmaking Legend and the Future of Cinema

October 15, 2019 - Phoenix Theatres at the Mall of Monroe is proud to announce the Douglas Trumbull Film Forum, an all-day exhibition on December 7 that will feature works from the film director and cinematic visionary’s entire career, emphasizing Trumbull’s cinematic vision of immersive, experiential cinema through the technology MAGI. Trumbull will be in attendance to give a Master Class lecture as well.

“I had the opportunity to see Douglas Trumbull’s new MAGI high frame rate 3D presentation at Trumbull Studios and it was the most immersive movie-going experience I have ever had in over 40 years in the movie business,” said Cory Jacobson, owner Phoenix Theatres. “The clarity and dimension MAGI provides is as realistic as virtual reality in a theatre auditorium.”

What is MAGI?

In short, MAGI is the most immersive movie-going experience in history. Douglas Trumbull’s proprietary filming and presentation processes create a brighter, sharper, more realistic image than anything that has come before. Shot and projected in 2D and 3D at 120 frames per second (traditional film only utilizes 24 fps) using unique and patented frame rate technology, MAGI immerses the viewer in a way traditional photographic/projection technology cannot. And with so much high-quality digital content available to the average movie watcher, Trumbull’s MAGI process is exactly the thing modern cinema needs to reinvigorate the spirit of true movie magic. Just as Douglas was enamored with ambitious technologies like 70mm Cinerama when he was young, his vision of cinema’s future is no less as grand, and MAGI is his magnum opus.

On December 7th, attendees will have the chance to enjoy a robust lineup of science fiction classics such as Silent Running, Brainstorm, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and a special 40th Anniversary presentation of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, all presented in modern DCP formats. In addition to the slate of feature films, Douglas Trumbull’s short film UFOTOG, which details his cutting-edge MAGI filming process, will play every 30 minutes in an auditorium outfitted to project the film using his revolutionary 3D, 120 frame-per-second technology.

Those interested in delving deeper into the filmmaking process can experience a Master Class lecture given by Douglas Trumbull himself regarding his philosophies on filmmaking, the role of visual effects, and the future of cinema, plus his unique MAGI photographic and projection technology. The forum will also host smaller film-centric panels with local members the film educational community as well as the regional filmmaking society, each taking place at various points in the day.

Those interested in doing a little exploring between screenings can visit an exciting Star Trek themed convention in the adjoining space inside the Mall of Monroe, presented and hosted in cooperation with The League of Enchantment, a 501c3 Nonprofit with the mission to work together with local hospitals,

Make-A- Wish, and community organizations and events to bring hope and smiles to kids, and kids at heart. Whether it is a smile, hug, photo or a simple conversation with a child, The League is there to make a difference in their lives all through the power of cosplay.
